Role of Essential Oils In The Treatment of PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS (PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome) is a common metabolic and hormonal disorder that affects up to 12% of women around the world. It can develop in women during adolescence and childbearing, causing excess hormonal imbalance and insulin in the blood, leading to the formation of cysts in the ovaries.
PCOS is characterized by a set of signs and symptoms. However, one patient may have entirely different symptoms from another. If you have two or more of the following symptoms, I would suggest that you get yourself tested for PCOS:
- Irregular or absent menstrual periods
- Infertility
- Excess or unwanted facial hair
- Hair loss on the scalp
- Weight issues, which often include weight gain around the waist
- Skin diseases including darkening of the skin skin tags and acne

The two images below show 12 facts about PCOS:
Why Aromatherapy Is Useful For Conditions Like PCOS?
Aromatherapy is an alternative healing practice that uses essential oils and other aromatic compounds from plants to improve overall health and well-being of an individual. Essential oils, which are generally used for their medicinal properties, are formed naturally in plants, flowers, fruit, roots, etc.
These essential oils can be used with massage oil, used in a cold or warm compress, heated in an oil burner, applied topically on the skin or hair, or inhaled in the form of steam.
Dealing with PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) may be stressful and requires a lot of patience before you witness any positive results. Whist science is yet to find a cure for PCOS, alternative healing modalities like aromatherapy can be used successfully to alleviate the symptoms of PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome. It is believed that the fragrance of essential oils stimulates the olfactory system of the brain that controls our sense of smell. Because of the smell of these essential oils, the limbic system of the brain releases chemicals that work to restore hormonal balance, release emotional stress and impart the feeling of relaxation and wellbeing, thus easing the symptoms of PCOS.
6 Best Essential Oils To Use To Ease The Symptoms Of PCOS
1. Beat stress with lavender and geranium essential oils
Dealing with PCOS can be stressful and the more stressed you are, the more serious your symptoms become. There are many essential oils to help you relax. The next time you feel stressed, one of the best things you can do is add a few drops of Lavender to your bath water and soak yourself in for half an hour. Doing this a couple of times a week will improve your overall perception of life, help your body relax and reduce the chances of development of PCOS related depression.
Lavender is also great circulatory and immune system stimulant that is very useful for the mood swings associated with premenstrual syndrome or hormonal imbalances.
Geranium is a stimulant of the adrenal cortex; helping to regulate and balance hormones. While helping to detoxify the lymphatic system, Geranium can also act as an antidepressant that relieves anxiety. It also acts as a uterine and ovarian tonic. Having a bath with a combination of these oils can relieve stress.
2. Regulate your hormones with the help of essential oil of geranium
With all its health benefits, geranium is one of the best oils you can incorporate in your daily routine. While helping the body to combat variety of skin illnesses, one of the first things geranium does is helping the body to reduce its tendency of water retention. In addition to that, geranium will help you control all the stress and help adrenal cortex to release the required amount of hormones in your body system. With these hormones regulated, dealing with PCOS will be easier.
3. Clary Sage as a uterine tonic
Clary Sage is beneficial for a variety of reasons. While being good for the female reproductive system due to its property of stimulating the production of estrogen in the body, Sage can be used for reducing the menstrual cramps during the PMS and as the treatment for anxiety and depression experienced during PCOS. It is also among few good essential oils that can control hormonal imbalance in the body. Clary Sage is also a tonic for the uterus that can play a role in regulating the menstrual cycle.
4. Improving reproductive health with German Chamomile
Fertility problems are one of the most devastating problems associated with PCOS. However, the good news is that most of the doctors have learned to work closely with their patients to design a mechanism that can help them conceive. The essential oil of German Chamomile has been traditionally used to help people with conditions like inflammation, but recent studies show that it can be used for more. Some women with PCOS have found that German chamomile helps them handle their anger and depression, which is often a side effect of PCOS. More importantly, this essential oil can help with ovarian cysts that make conception difficult for a woman.
5. Rose Otto
This oil is useful in the treatment of premenstrual syndrome and menstrual cycle regulation. As it relaxes the uterus, it can be helpful for women who have conception related troubles. In addition, it is very helpful in helping a PCOS patient get rid of depression and sadness.
6. Sweet Fennel
Sweet Fennel helps regulate the menstrual cycle and reduces the hormonal fluctuations.
Few Other Essential Oils That Can Help To Treat The Symptoms Of PCOS
- Jasmine can fix the low levels of low libido in the body, emotional stress, feelings of depression and low self-esteem.
- Cypress, Cinnamon, Coriander and Dill can regulate levels of blood sugar in the body, helping to control the weight and appetite.
- Eucalyptus oilcan regulate the hormone associated with fluid retention and pain. It can actively reduce the levels of blood sugar in the body.
- Fennel helps regulate hormone levels and menstrual cycles.
- Sandalwood is a well-known tonic for the female reproductive system.
- Rose can regulate the irregular menstrual cycle and hormonal imbalances.
- Ylang Ylang can relieve mood swings, feelings of depression, anxiety and hypertension.
While there are many benefits of using essential oils for conditions like PCOS, it will take a while to find oils that work best for you. I always keep Lavender and Clary Sage handy at all times because they are my absolute favorites.
6 Essential Oil Recipes To Help You With PCOS
1. Blend of Lavender and Geranium
Lavender can be used to relieve stress and geranium is the best oil you can use for the normalization of hormone secretions in your body and as an antidepressant. Here are a few of the best ways to use lavender and geranium for maximum relief in PCOS:
Detoxification bath
Here is how to create a detoxification bath using a combination of these two oils:
- 10 drops of geranium
- 15 drops of lavender
- 1 cup sodium bicarbonate
- 4 cups of Epsom salt (useful because of its magnesium content, which is easily absorbed into the skin and creates a soothing effect).
Mix all the ingredients in the above mentioned amounts in your bath water and soak yourself in for at least 30 minutes.
2. Topical application
If used correctly, lavender and geranium can help with fertility issues. Simply combining the following essential oils in 4 ounces of carrier oil (such as vitamin E oil, for example) and rubbing the blend on your stomach is said to improve fertility. Here is a recipe I would suggest you to use:
- 10 drops clary sage (uterine tonic)
- 10 drops of fennel (regularizes menstrual cycle and reduces the fluctuation of hormones)
- 7 drops of geranium (useful for the toning of uterus and ovaries)
- 3 drops of lavender (circulatory stimulant)
- 3 drops of Rose (relaxes the uterus)
Blend all the ingredients in above-mentioned amounts in 4 ounces of carrier oil and massage your stomach twice daily.
3. Essential oil recipe to avoid hair loss in PCOS affected women
With infertility and PCOS, hair loss is something that many women have to face. If this is the case with you, here is the mix of oils essential oils you can use:
- 1 ounce jojoba oil

- 6 drops of cedarwood
- 4 drops of sage
- 10 drops of rosemary
- 4 drops of lavender
- 8 drops of thyme
Blend all these essential oils and apply over a clean scalp every morning and night.
In addition to the oils listed above, I have had a very positive experience with the use of Frankincense. Frankincense can be used for the treatment and prevention of fibroids and cysts in the ovaries. It can also help balance the endocrine system.
You can add Frankincense directly to a warm bath or hot compress or just add few drops of it in 2 ounces of water and soak a cotton cloth in this water mixture for a tampon.
4. Recipe for Detox Bath
Ingredients
- 5 drops of geranium
- 10 drops of lavender

Add all the ingredients to the bath water and soak in for 20 minutes. Epsom salt contains magnesium, which is easily absorbed into the skin to soothe the nerves and help you relax.
5. Essential oil recipe for fertility support
When I was trying to get pregnant, I used the following combination of essential oils to help my conception:

- 12 drops of Clary Sage
- 10 drops of geranium
- 12 drops of sweet fennel
- 5 drops of Rose
- 5 drops of lavender
- 5 oz. carrier oil
Some essential oils are quite strong. Start with small amounts before using them in larger quantities. Rub the abdomen with the blend of abovementioned essential oils to help your conception.

Add these essential oils in above-mentioned amounts in 2 tablespoons of carrier oil and add 6 drops of this blend in your bathwater.
5 Superfoods That Restore The Hormonal Balance In The Body
No. 1 Fermented Cod Liver Oil
If you are unable to afford cod liver oil, you can use flaxseed oil as its supplement. However, I took flaxseed oil a few years ago, but never had the results similar to fermented cod liver oil. The reason why both these oils help with conditions like PCOS is the presence of high amounts of Vitamin C.
No. 2 Coconut oil
I take 4-5 tablespoons of coconut oil per day in order to keep conditions like PCOS at bay. Caprylic acid and lauric acid present in coconut oil plays a vital role in protecting the gastrointestinal tract, and preventing the intestinal inflammation from happening.
No. 3 Magnesium
Try 600-900 mg of magnesium per day. Magnesium helps with hundreds of things with the body including keeping your gut healthy and helping you to sleep easily.
No. 4 L-glutamine
It is recommended to take about 20 g of L-glutamine per day in the form of powder. This keeps my gut healthy and hormonal problems at bay.
No. 5 Niacin
Niacin has helped me with my inflammation and acne on the face. You can take niacin in the form of pills or use it as a spray to make your skin look healthy and beautiful.
5 Foods To Avoid If You Are Suffering From PCOS
No. 1 Soy
Soy is a phytoestrogen (false estrogen) that has estrogen like properties. Regular intake of Soy promotes hormonal confusion. However, if you still want to eat Soy, just make sure that it is coming from a good source.
No. 2 Flax
Flax is another food that is highly controversial due to the presence of the same phytoestrogens.
No. 3 Gluten (wheat)
Gluten slows down the absorption of nutrients in the body; I feel much better without it.
No. 4 Excess sugar
We all know that too much of sugar is bad for the overall health of an individual. Excess sugar present in the body encourages the formation of cysts.
No. 5 The bad fats
Excess consumption of trans fats can cause inflammation in the body.
Few Precautions To Bear In Mind
When using essential oils on the skin, you must first dilute them in carrier oil. Good choices for carrier oils include fractionated coconut oil, sweet almond oil, apricot kernel, avocado, jojoba, olive, hazelnut, sesame, macadamia nuts, grape seed and castor. In addition to that, remember to use one or two drops of the oil on a small patch of skin first to make sure you do not have an allergic reaction to it.
Healthy Lifestyle As The Best Preventive Measure Against PCOS
The treatment for PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome is generally based on the symptoms, age and the future conception plans of a woman. One of the best treatments for PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome is following a healthy lifestyle. A healthy diet that is low in refined carbohydrates can help regulate blood sugar levels. Exercise can also help the body to regulate insulin and in weight management.
Losing weight is a challenge with PCOS, but it can help to reduce levels of male hormones in the body, and make some women ovulate naturally. With the correct diagnosis of the disease and healthy lifestyle modifications, you can expect to get rid of this condition and the enormous health issues it can cause in future.
Hi there, Thanks for this very informative article. I only have Clary Sage here, 1gm vial and 50ml virgin coconut oil. Do you think 1gm of clary sage to 50ml vco is enough for topical application in abdominal area? this is what i only have for now.
Hi Isthel,
No worries. You can use 1gm clary sage in 30ml VCO.
Regards,
Olivia

what would i need to add into my bath if i have pcos and want to get pregnant ?
Hi Amber,
You’ll need to visit your doctor to do some tests, etc. In the meantime, you could add 8 drops sage, 10 drops geranium and 6 drops cypress together with 1 cup Epsom salt in the bathtub.
Most of all, don’t stress out and be positive.

Olivia
hi what would i need to add into my bath if i need help conceiving with pcos??
Hi Olivia,
I have had PCOS for most of my life and have recently found EO. They have helped so much with my daily depression, however as I have started to have period’s again since using them to regulate my hormones I am now stuck with the debilitating pain that is caused with the menses.
Do you have any recipes to help combat the pain?
I am open to all options.
Hi Nikaela,
Please refer to the article below for managing painful menses. I trust this helps – you’ll find recipes that you can use.

I thought I’d give you a headsup that you can use the L’orpur pure blends to help with depression. It has helped a lot of others as you can read from the reviews.

Olivia
HI,
I have read all the article and comments, thank you, everyone. I have had POCS for more than 17 years but only had medical treatment for 5. AS POCS cause excess facial hair can some please tell me how to combat it please. as that and weight gain are my big problems as I don’t plan I having any more children.
Thanks
Hi Jaimee,
Sure, for removal of excess facial hair:
You can use a spray consisting of 10 drops each of lavender and tea tree essential oil diluted in 1 ounce of witch hazel on affected areas 2 times a day. This will take 2-3 months before you see any results. You can also assist by tweezing the hair out.
Turmeric, as you probably know has been used for centuries in India as a beauty product. You can either mix equal amounts of turmeric powder with chickpea flour with water to make a paste or use turmeric powder, tea tree oil and plain yogurt to make a paste. Apply like a mask to affected areas. Leave in for 15 minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water. This will reduce the hair follicles and make hair growth slower.
For weight gain, please refer to the post below:

Spearmint! My twin sister and I have dealt with PCOS for over 30 years (they just didn’t know what it was way back then). My sister read an article that said to dilute spearmint and apply it to the insides of your ankles and wow. The difference was noticeable in about a week. Doesn’t make it go away, but it’s softer and doesn’t seem to be as thick, making ours less noticeable. Hope it works for you!
Hi Claire,
Thanks a lot for sharing, something new that I’ve learnt today, it is much appreciated.
You can click the link below for best spearmint.

Hi Olivia, my 17 year old daughter had recently been confirmed to have PCOS, high estrogens and extremely obese. She has very irregular menses (up to 6 months interval). She is also under extreme stress from her studies.
She was prescribed with hormone medication (Diane 35) by my gynae to be taken every night for a month and then her menses will come, and then we continue the medication again.
Although the medication regulates her hormones (including a nice complexion), I am not keen to have her take this medication on a long term basis as she is still so young.
I am a strong believer of EOs and would like to get your advice and guidance on what is the best way I should do. Should i stop her medication now (i know her doctor will be upset) and how do i monitor her situation?
I was told we must regulate her menses if not there’s a high risk of ovarian cancer later on in her life.
Thank you for any suggestion you can share with me. Thanks!
Hi Annie,
Unfortunately, I am not a doctor and you’ll have to go with the advice of your doctor or seek a second opinion if unsure.
EO can indeed help and you can start introducing one of the recipes as part of her daily routine, but I really cannot comment on the medication.
If you need help with the recipes, etc. please drop me a line, happy to assist.
Regards,
Olivia
Yes, would like to know the recipes. Thanks.
Hi Annie,
You can follow any of the recipes in the article. If you need further help, please don’t hesitate.

I suffer from PCOS, however I’ve had a hysterectomy bit I still have my ovaries. I’ve been using Progessence Plus at night. I’m trying to find a good blend of oils to help with ovarian pain when it’s ovulation time, as it brings to my knees or bed for a good day or so. I’ve read several things about Melrose and Frankincense for ovarian cysts, as well as Ocotea however not much info for a PCOS patient that’shad a hysterectomy. Any thoughts? Your help is greatly appreciated.
Hi Julie,
You could try a blend of 7 drops ginger, 4 drops frankincense and 3 drops lavender diluted in 1 ounce sweet almond oil. Gently rub the blend to the affected areas up to three times a day.
Make sure you purchase your essential oils from a trusted source.
Regards,
Olivia
Julie, another one that might help is copaiba considered a “magnifier” and is anti-inflammatory so could be helpful.
Hi Cindy,
Thanks for sharing.

Hi DAndrea,
All the best and good luck. Any questions, don’t hesitate.

Olivia
I first had symptoms when i was 17 and was told that i had PCOS (thin people type PCOS) and was officially diagnosed at 22 ans now i am 35. I have always had regular periods and unless on birth control pills were they irregular at times and I had a hard time getting pregnant because of the absent periods. I was always told by doctors that I would have a hard time conceiving so I would only go on the pill periodically which i did for more than 4 years, not for protection against getting pregnant, but just to get a period (since I was told it’s not healthy to have less than 4 or so periods a year). Last time I went on a 3 month birth control pill and then stopped again because the medicine was not curing my pcos nor making me get pregnant. I went in search for a cure and ended up with so many drugs, medicine and even soaps that didn’t work. I actually thought at a point that i was cursed that there is no cure for it, i was prepared to live like that till i read a testimony of a patient who suffered from pcos whose case was even worse than mine and how she was cured completely, I was amazed and at thesame time anxious and curious so i had to contact the doctor with the contact details that she left on the note. The doctor gave me so much hope and confidence with her kind words of encouragement to believe in myself and i was lifted because no one has ever given me hope like that before. I ordered the medicine, took it for 8 weeks and to my complete surprise, all the facial hairs, weight gain and all disappeared within 4 weeks and I ended up getting pregnant within a few weeks of completing the treatment! I was in shock. I think the main reasons it happened was that I never gave up and was ready to try alternative treatment so my body was back to normal. Before now i never enjoyed sex because it was very painful but now i do and my husband is the best thing that ever happened to me.. I hope this inspires some of you because I never in a million years would have thought that I would get pregnant and was getting frustrated and now our baby is due next month!
Hi Priyanka,
Thanks very much for your very inspirational story.
I appreciate the time and courage it took you to share this with us all. Well done and I wish you all the best with your new baby. Congratulations!

Question from J:
it talks about a detoxification bath and it say to stay in it for 30 mins at least….
so two things
1 how often does that bath need to be repeated?
2 what is the maximum time that should be spent in the bath?
Olivia’s Response:
I would do it once and up to two times per week.
You can spend from 30-45 minutes, just make sure to add warm water if the water is getting cold.
What if one doesn’t have a bath tub. How to use it in shower/bucket water bath?
Hi Preeti,
You’ll need something to soak yourself in and let your body relax and come in contact with EOs.
Regards,
Olivia
Hi!
I i’m very new to using essential oils and was inspired to try them by my friend and your blog was the most helpful i’ve found so far!
for my PCOS I have 9 essential oils: German Chamomile, Sweet Fennel, White Thyme, Geranium, Lavender, Eucalyptus, Ylang Ylang, Sandalwood & Clary Sage. (planning to use topically)
Are there any of these oils that I should not mix together? Can I mix all 9 together or would they be more effective in smaller mixtures? Can I use these oils every day from here on out, even during my cycle?
Please help! Thank you so very much in advance!!!
Hi Tessa,
Thank you for your positive feedback. There is no need to mix up all those 9 essential oils.
You can make up a blend for PCOS as follows: 3 drops german chamomile, 4 drops lavender, 6 drops geranium, 5 drops clary sage, 2 drops ylang ylang. Please dilute in 30ml (1 ounce) of carrier oil (jojoba, sweet almond) and apply topically.
A second blend that you can make up is 4 drops sweet fennel, 4 drops white thyme, 5 drops eucalyptus and 5 drops sandalwood. diluted in 1 ounce carrier oil.
Indeed, you can use on a daily basis including during cycles. You may try to alternate the 2 above blends and see which one is more effective. I would be pleased to get some feedback as well.
Regards,
Olivia
Question from LS:
I need some oil that has already been mixed for Hot flashes.
Olivia’s Response:
I am sorry, but I am not sure whether this is available or not. If there is a particular recipe you want to try, please get the essential oils and I will help you with the mixing.
Question from L:
Have teenage granddaughter who just stated her mensrtual cycle. Need a blend to help cope with the hormones running amuck!
Olivia’s Response:
The most effective essential oils for hormone balance are: clary sage, geranium, thyme, rose, sandalwood, lemongrass.
Add 5 drops each of any 3 of the above essential oils diluted in a carrier oil (coconut, almond) in 1 fl. oz. bottle (30ml). Apply topically on various parts of the body including the back of neck and lower abdomen. You can also enjoy a warm soak with 6 drops each of geranium and clary sage in the bath.
Question from SN:
Olivia. I hv been following ur articles. Do u hv remedy for menstrual pain.
Olivia’s Response:
The most effective essential oils for menstrual pain are: marjoram, clary sage, geranium, chamomile, yarrow, eucalyptus, ylang-ylang, cypress, clove, peppermint. You can massage 5-6 drops of the above essential oils diluted in a carrier oil (almond, jojoba) when the symptoms appear (i.e. few days before the menstrual cycle) on the lower abdomen and back of neck. You can also use a warm compress together with peppermint essential oil
Also please ensure you eat plenty of green leafy vegetables, avocado, fish, fruits and nuts.
Question from MC:
I noticed on the recipe for menstrual cramps it says to take internally. I am really new to essential oils and was not sure how to do this. Thanks.
Olivia’s Response:
You will need to consult with your doctor first in case of any underlying health conditions prior to ingesting essential oils. Once confirmed, ensure the essential oils are therapeutic grade edible essential oils for internal consumption.
If you need more help, please drop me a line.
Thank you for this information about the EOs, however there is (little) new research stating that Flaxseed supplementation can actually benefit women with PCOS. It has dramatically improved my overall health and PCOS. Flaxseed can be major part of a healthy lifestyle, helping aid in weight loss and lower testosterone levels.
Hi Richele,
You are welcome. And thanks so much for sharing the information on Flaxseed and the positive experience you’ve had using it; it is greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Olivia
Is there a better time of your cycle to use certain blends?
Hi Kristin,
It is hard to give you a definite answer, but as far as I know you can use any blend at any particular time.
Regards,
Thank you so much for this information
Hi Mariona,
You are most welcome. Take care.
Olivia
I’m trying one of your topical recipes. Do you use it every day or just for a couple of days at a time? Should it make you bleed heavily?
Hi Melanie,
You can use a particular essential oil recipe for one to two weeks, then take a break before starting the routine again. If the results are not to your satisfaction, try a different recipe.
One of the symptoms of PCOS is irregular periods whereby you may bleed more than normal. Let me know if you need more help.
Regards,
Olivia
Hi Olivia,
I am a PCOS patient too. Now, in my past I have tried medicines like Overall – L and Diane 35 but they were of no help. I also tried mixing lavender oil with lime oil and no results there either. Right now I am trying very hard to ovulate and conceive. Plz help with proper oil recipe.
I am unable to pinpoint my ovulation since my cycles are irregular.
Also, plz help me with some oil to get rid of under-arm and neck pigmentation… Those area have become 5 shades darker than my skin complexion.
Hi Preeti,
I would suggest you try the recipes in the post. I am sure you are seeing a doctor, if not, you should seek advice accordingly.
I will have a full post on pigmentation in the next few weeks, so stay tuned.
Regards,
Olivia
