Can Essential Oils Be Used On Dogs: A How-To Guide For The Safe And Effective Use Essential Oils On Dogs
Just as essential oils can benefit people both physically and psychologically, their benefits can easily be extended to your favorite pet such as your dog. In fact, these natural and aromatic oils (i.e. essential oils) have gained huge popularity among the veterinarians throughout the world as a natural and safe treatment method for curing almost any health issue in dogs.
While there are many essential oils that can be considered safe for dogs, you need not buy all of them. Some of them can be considered as “must have’s” while there are others that are “good to have”, depending on the type of care your dog needs.
Just remember that essential oils should be used in very small quantities on dogs and most importantly, dilute, dilute and dilute them in a carrier oil every single time. The reason is that your pup has an extraordinary keen sense of smell which is complex and amazing, and 000’s of times more powerful than yours.
With that in mind, here is a list of few safe essential oils for dogs, along with a brief description of their properties and use for your quick reference.
10 Safe Essential Oils For Use On Dogs
1. Cedar
Apart from killing pests in dogs, Cedar oil when used in right proportions provides a calming effect on dogs and supports healthy skin. You can use this oil in a diffuser to keep your dog calm. If the dog feels sleepy after the application of cedar oil, it is due to the slight analgesic effect of the cedar oil.
2. Lavender
If you need to have only one essential oil at home for your dog, then Lavender is the one to have, i.e. it is a ‘must-have’. Lavender is a full-spectrum oil with antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiseptic and antifungal properties. If you do not know what problem your dog is experiencing, but want to make your dog feel better, just rub 2 drops of Lavender oil diluted in 2 tsp of coconut oil on the area he/she is scratching.
3. Chamomile
German chamomile has anti-inflammatory benefits, which may be good for the skin and hair of the dog. In addition, it can help reduce the reactions caused due to allergies. Roman chamomile can help calm the nerves and reduce cramps, teething pain and muscle aches. It is the second ‘must-have’ essential oil for dogs.
4. Lemongrass
Even when used in small amounts, Lemongrass will easily get rid of fleas and ticks and can improve the overall skin condition of your dog.
5. Niaouli
This replacement of tea tree oil, yet less likely to cause irritation compared to tea tree, is the third ‘must-have’ for dogs. It has anti-bacterial and anti-histamine properties, and can help eliminate skin issues caused due to allergies.
6. Peppermint
This essential oil is an antispasmodic that helps to stimulate circulation, ultimately benefiting the skin and hair of the dog. Peppermint is also known to treat arthritis and motion sickness in dogs. However, it should not be used in small dogs and pregnant dogs.
7. Frankincense
Frankincense oil is a safer and frequently used in many aspects of pet care from antibacterial healing to behavior improvement to wound care.
8. Cardamom
Cardamom is a natural diuretic that has anti-bacterial benefits as well. It can help relieve nausea, treat cough, and normalize the appetite of your dog, if he is eating less than usual.
9. Sweet Marjoram
Sweet Marjoram is the only variety of Marjoram group of essential oils that can be used on dogs. In addition to being a potent antibacterial, marjoram is also a muscle relaxant. Vets also use this oil to treat bacterial infections of the skin and the wounds.
10. Helichrysum
This oil is ideal for skin diseases (such as eczema) and irritation in dogs. While being a potent pain-relieving agent that has analgesic properties, it is also the best oil to use for skin cell regeneration.
What Essential Oils Dilution Rate Should I Use For Dogs?
The best way to dilute essential oils prior to using on dogs is to base the calculation on the dog’s weight. A smaller dog that weighs less than 20 pounds should be treated with a dose that is 80-90 percent diluted. Use 1 drop of essential oil in 1 tsp of carrier oil.
For larger dogs, you can use 2-3 drops of essential oils diluted in 1 tsp of carrier oil. Paws are an ideal spot to apply essential oils. If you are applying the oils to your dog’s skin, rub it onto your hands and gently stroke the dog’s fur. Keep in mind, as we do with humans, it is always better to start using a lesser amount of essential oils.
The following sections describe essential oils for different ailments in dogs.

Precautions To Be Taken When Using Essential Oils On Dogs
While essential oils may have a variety of benefits for the dog, one must be careful about the way these essential oils are used. First, always use therapeutic grade oils purchased from a reliable source. It is also important to note that while many oils may be safe for human use in their natural forms, dogs have a far more advanced sense of smell. For that reason, please use a higher dilution factor before using them on dogs; olive, almond or coconut oil are great carrier oils for dilution.
Before using any of the essential oils, it is always a good idea to contact your vet – this is especially true if the dog is on medication, which is likely to interfere with the essential oil being used.
Watch your dog closely for signs indicating his dislike towards the essential oil being used. Stop using the oil immediately if the dog isn’t comfortable with it. In order to reduce the chances of toxicity and sensitivity in dogs, do not use any essential oil for more than two weeks.
Your article is very informative and interesting. It’s very helpful for me. Thank you
You’re welcome.

Question from SG:
Hello Olivia, Please reference ASPCA and VCA reference safe and unsafe oils for dogs. I taught E.O. classes and still had a mishap from young living essential oils being diffused and poisoning our dog. Rosemary, Clove, Citrus, Pennyroyal so many essential oils can be lethal, toxic and poisonous for our dogs.
Olivia’s Response:
Thanks for reaching out and sorry to hear about your dog. Here are the necessary references:

Hi,
I have the Marjoram essential oil Origanum majorana. Is this the correct Marjoram to use on dogs?
Hi Janet,
Yes it is – it’s the sweet marjoram version.
Regards,
Olivia
Tried tablets and the collar to get rid of ticks and fleas, did work initially, but they ended up coming back. Ended up looking at natural remedies and I used about 10 drops of citronella and geranium essential oil in 1 cup cider vinagar and water in a spray. Sprayed my labrador twice a day for 5 days and all’s been great since. Not a single bug to deal with!
Hi Alex,
Thanks for sharing your story about the benefits of using essential oils to tackle fleas/ticks on your dog!
Regards,
Olivia
I use your pain mist and it works wonders for all kinds of things. Good to know that I can use it on my dogs by diluting it as suggested on some posts above. I have a problem with one of my cats pestering the heck out of me trying to lick me when I apply it. I have to lock her in another room. She loves the smell. She has a skin problem with teeny sores and hair loss from itching. The vet gave me a medicated shampoo and that helps but she hates baths. I wonder if there is something in your formula that tells her natural instinct she needs it. Of course I do NOT let her get near it. Please give me the link to the cat blog if you have done it yet. I would love to try EO on her skin if there are any that are safe. THANKS! Love your products and advice.
Hi Pamela,
That is quite interesting behavior from your cat. Maybe she loves my products! you are right, but best to be careful and I would avoid using essential oils on cats altogether just in case.
You can use hydrosols on cats as they are safe, refer to the article below:
https://essentialoilbenefits.com/can-use-essential-oils-cats/
Perhaps for her skin irritation, a rose hydrosol may help.
And for healing/soothing, a chamomile hydrosol may help.
If you have any other queries, please don’t hesitate.
Regards,
Olivia
If it contains any of the mint oils that would probably be what is catching kitties attention! Menthol is basically like cat nip for them, they absolutely love it!! I can’t use sports creams on an old shoulder injury with one of my cats around. He will literally try to attack my shoulder he wants to lick it so bad, the other cat isn’t phased by it at all…i swear he is half dog though!
Hi Kim,
Thanks for sharing, loving it!
Regards,
Olivia

Hi Olivia! 🙂 How are you ?
You talk about stress and anxiety for dogs- what about horses? I have a friend that purchased a really cool older mare (20) that has a hard time with stalls- she is turned out most of the time, but is still shown once in a while. (which is when she struggles) She weaves and has some separation anxiety. She is in excellent health and shape. I was thinking lavender, frankincense, myrrh, vetiver, cedarwood and possisble sweet marjoram? I want to make a 1 oz sprayer bottle with fractionated coconut oil. Is this too many for her at once and if so how many? Also not sure what ratios (drops of each oil to use). I don’t want to overwhelm her further. She also performs well, just has issues with stalls and being by herself in one. Really amazing animal! 🙂 Please and thank you so much!
Hi Andrea,
I am very well, thanks for asking. Hope you are good too.
You can use all the above essential oils for anxiety in horses, except perhaps Frankincense and Cedarwood may also be too strong and overpowering. Sweet Marjoram is fine to use.
Use 2-3 drops of each the remaining essential oils (lavender, myrrh, vetiver, sweet marjoram) in a 1 fl. oz. spray bottle, diluted in FCO.
Hope everything goes well and the horse can finally be ok with stalls.
Regards,
Olivia
Thank you 🙂 !!
Hi Andrea,
You are welcome.

Olivia
Question from KD:
If I put lavender mixed with oils on my dog’s fur, I am sure she will lick that..is that dangerous? Or are any of the essential oils for dogs dangerous if they lick it? She is being driven crazy with itch, and the vet told me to get Benadryl, which she is now taking, although I hate pills of any kind. also I have severe itching, tingling, stinging on my back and have for years and no dr. knows what it is from..I went to allergist few wks back and he said he thinks I had shingles without the sores, but a slight rash, and this is post herpetic neuralgia (nerves) which is causing all my symptoms- pain- on my back. This has been doing on for about 5 yrs.and has about driven me to jump off a bridge as it never ceases. He put me on Lyrica which I hate being on with all the side effects that can happen. I was on anti depressants for years and went off them and about went crazy with after effects…wouldn’t recommend them to many people, that’s for sure as they are very, very addictive. Course drs don’t tell you that…it is a pharmaceutical world that is for sure.
So I have two issues her I am asking you about, my precious dog’s itching and mien, also! Thanks!
God bless you for all your hard work with helping people without using drugs..God gave us natural help and man refuses to use it, huh!
Olivia’s Response:
I am extremely sorry for the issues you are currently going through. Surely, there will be better days ahead.
Before putting any essential oils on your dog, make sure you dilute it. For itching, please mix 2 drops lavender, 2 drops geranium, 2 drops chamomile and add this to 10ml of coconut oil. Then apply this mixture on your dog’s coat.
You can read more about how to treat shingles with essential oils here:
https://essentialoilbenefits.com/best-essential-oils-for-shingles-and-phn-symptoms
For pain relief, you can use my own blend of pain relief oil, l’orpur. You will definitely be able to get rid of the pain within a few uses. Click here for more info.
And most of all, thank you for writing and asking for help. I love your quote at the end as well.
If you need further help, do not hesitate.
Take care.
Question from ML:
Too bad I don’t have any dogs! I do however have 2 beautiful persian cats and I am sad because I read that E.O.s are dangerous for cats.
Maybe there are a few that aren’t? Do you know if I could spray some hydrosols instead in the house? What about diffusers, can I use that?
Thank you
Olivia’s Response:
You could consider the use of carrot seed and juniper essential oils with extreme caution at a very high dilution rate for your cats. I would still not use them, if you really wanted to, then please consult with your Vet beforehand.
Hydrosols are far more diluted than essential oils, therefore are a much safer option. However, do not spray the hydrosol on your cat; see if they like it first by letting them smell it. If they are happy with it, dilute it further and spray on your hands before rubbing the coat of your cats with it. Witch Hazel water can be used, with much care, for odor control as well as for flea and tick control on cats.
Tea tree is not recommended for dogs or cats. Please reconsider removing this from your list
Hi Marva,
Thank you for sharing your concern. I have added a note to that effect in the article about tea tree oil not recommended for use on dogs or cats.

Olivia
Perhaps a recipe for essential oils for anxiety and impatience would be beneficial to CB so she/he can take a breath and do some research before yelling at someone for helping others.
Hi SMB,
It is somehow fascinating the extent some people will go to make their comments heard on a public blog. He/she could have said the same thing in a much more civilized way.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts; I really appreciate.
Take care.
Olivia
My cat is chewing her fur on her tummy and legs. Bet says it could be nerves.
Hi Laura,
I will have an article on essential oils for cats in the coming months. Some essential oils can be highly toxic for cats as opposed to dogs. I would suggest that you get an accurate diagnosis from your vet and I’ll advise further in case essential oils could be of benefit. In any case, please do not use essential oils on your cat without proper advice.
Regards,
Olivia
