What Are The Best Essential Oils That Treat, Reduce And Remove Cellulite Essential Oil Benefits

Cellulite is an age-old medical condition that has always bothered women around the world. We are always reading on the media or on social networks about celebrities giving away their secret recipes for cellulite treatment and removal. There are also various cellulite natural remedies appearing on women’s websites and magazines, but I feel the issue is still not resolved, as the root cause of the disease is often not addressed.

To date, the reasons for cellulite formation are not known, however factors such as hormones, genetics, diet, lifestyle and even clothing have been put forth as probable theories. While females who are obese tend to have a greater chance of getting cellulite, others are also at risk. Let’s dive in…

What Exactly Is Cellulite?

What Are The Best Essential Oils That Treat, Reduce And Remove Cellulite Essential Oil Benefits

The notorious orange peel or cottage cheese skin condition known as cellulite affects nearly 90% women all over the world. Another classic case of Mother Nature being unfair to her own kind, the bumpy uneven skin texture results from fat cells pushing against the layer of connective tissue that lies right above them.

Contrary to perception, cellulite is not an obesity related problem, rather it is a structural issue. So, you can suffer from it even if you don’t have an extra pound on you.

Cellulite is a state where the skin develops underlying fat deposits and appears as localized dimpling and bumpiness. Although it causes much distress to many ladies out there, it’s merely a cosmetic issue. So, it does not have any impact on the health of a person nor is there any discomfort, pain or itching involved.

In most cases, cellulite is a condition that occurs after adolescence and is more commonly seen on the thighs and butts. Cellulite is more common amongst ladies compared to men and there is a high probability that you will have cellulite if other females in your family have had this issue.

Causes Of Cellulite

What Are The Best Essential Oils That Treat, Reduce And Remove Cellulite Essential Oil Benefits

Here are some of the main causes of this condition:

1. It’s a feminine curse: Although 10% men do suffer from cellulite, the bumpiness usually graces the thighs and butts of women. Blame it on the fact that the collagen fibers are not as densely interwoven in gals as they are in men. So any weakness in these fibers gives fat cells the liberty to move upwards and out of their domain, which leads to the appearance of the peaks and valleys.

2. Age does matter: As you grow older, estrogen levels start dipping, which has a direct impact on the health of the circulatory system. The lower availability of blood and oxygen to the connective tissue not only impacts the strength of the existing collagen strands but also proves detrimental for the synthesis of new collagen fibers.

3. Blame it on mommy: If the women folk in your family have struggled with orange peel skin, chances are that you too may face the problem.

4. That extra serving of chocolate cake does make a difference: Although obesity is not a direct cause of cellulite, it does play an indirect role by adding to the thickness of the fatty layer, which ends up exerting more pressure on the connective tissue.

5. Couch surfing will bring trouble: A sedentary lifestyle can weaken the connective tissue, which means it will give away easily to the bulging fat cells.

6. Smoking is bad: Cigarettes are known to cause wrinkles and cellulite because they are bad for the health of collagen strands.

Why Use Essential Oils For Cellulite?

Essential oils can penetrate deep into the skin and solve a range of issues like stress, headaches, irregular menstrual periods, acne and sleeping disorders.

Aromatherapy using essential oils can likewise be an excellent aid in the battle against cellulite. Many essential oils have restorative abilities that help fix the hormonal imbalance (estrogen is the hormone contributing to both cellulite and obesity).

In fact, some essential oils have diuretic properties that help you beat water retention, which is the primary reason behind bulgy thighs. Whether you’re happy putting your bottom in an aromatherapy professional’s hands, or you like some do-it-yourself cellulite busting remedy, here’s all you need to know about removing cellulite with the use of essential oils. Let’s first understand…

How Do Essential Oils Help In Getting Rid Of Cellulite?

I have already told you that a combination of irregular bulging of the fat cells and weakened connective tissue is what leads to the bumpy appearance. But what causes these abnormalities? Well, this too is a result of gradual degradation and damage.

Chronic low grade inflammation caused by oxidative stress, poor circulation and lymphatic drainage, skin slackness, fibrosis and superficial fat accumulation all contribute to the cellulite problem. Come to think of it, almost all of these issues can be remedied with essential oils. And that is what makes them effective in preventing and treating cellulite!

Therapeutic healing grade essential oils address the root cause of the problem by helping the body get rid of toxins that accumulate in the fat cells. In addition, they enhance the blood circulation in the body and provide oxygen to the cells, thus helping the body get rid of the cellulite on its own.

How To Use Essential Oils To Get Rid Of Cellulite?

There are two easy ways to use essential oils to get rid of cellulite; A. aromatherapy massage and B. essential oil recipes.

A. Massage

What Are The Best Essential Oils That Treat, Reduce And Remove Cellulite Essential Oil Benefits

Add 3 to 4 drops of the essential oil of your choice to a tablespoon of carrier oil (almond, castor, coconut oil, etc.) and massage the blend onto your skin for a hydrated and firmer appearance. Repeat this everyday for the best outcome.

The Amazing Brushing technique – what kind of brush to use

The bristles of the brush you intend to use must be made of natural fibers (i.e. non-artificial) and be rather stiff, but not too rigid. Look for one that has a long handle for hard-to-reach areas, if required.

Make a blend

Keep in mind that the essential oils you are using in this technique should be diluted in carrier oil such as argan, avocado or evening primrose oil. Use 2 ml of the carrier oil for every drop of essential oil you are using. For example, if you are using 15 drops of essential oils, then you will need 30 ml (1 oz.) of carrier oil.

How to brush

Using a dry and soft-bristled body brush, brush the cellulite-affected areas with your essential oil blend making semi-circular strokes directed towards the heart until the skin soaks up all of the oil or starts to becomes red.

After the massage, you need to take a hot shower and pat your skin dry prior to starting the day. (Don’t forget that you can brush your skin every time before going for a shower and for best results, massage your skin a little using your hand before the brushing activity).

Precautions

  1. Do not brush on broken/cracked or irritated skin.
  2. Do not brush wet skin.
  3. Do not use essential oils if you are pregnant, unless advised by your aromatherapist or medical practitioner.

Additional tips

  • Bath: Just adding 5-10 drops of essential oil to a tubful of water is all you need to freshen up your skin and start the process of draining out cellulite.
  • Inhale: Simply inhaling the pure aroma of essential oils can revitalize your body to do all the detoxification required.

2. Fruity anti-cellulite blend of oils

This citrus massage oil blend smells fantastic and helps to improve the blood circulation when used regularly.

Ingredients

  • 6 drops of lemongrass essential oil
  • 8 drops of tangerine essential oil
  • 7 drops of sweet orange essential oil
  • 4 drops of geranium essential oil
  • 10 drops of grapefruit essential oil
  • 1 oz. coconut oil
  • 1 oz. castor oil

Direction

Mix in the essential oils with the carrier oils in a dark glad bottle. Massage the impacted areas using this blend every day, in the morning and at night before bedtime.

3. The skin smoothing soak

  • 2 cups Epsom salt
  • 1 cup rock salt/sea salt
  • 1 tsp milk (dairy or plant)
  • 2 drops each of sweet fennel, rosemary and basil
  • 3 drops turmeric
  • 5 drops geranium/rose geranium

Method

Draw a hot bath and when the tub is half way full, add the salts to the water. Mix the oils and the milk in a small glass bowl and add this blend to the bath tub. Agitate the water to dissolve the salt crystals and to disperse the oils. Soak yourself in the bath for 20- 30 minutes to give those tired and worn out connective fibers a new lease of life.

4. The hot and cold treatment

  • 20 ml ashwagandha (Indian Ginseng) infused oil (alternatively, you can use mustard seed carrier oil)
  • 20 ml camellia sinensis oil
  • 10 drops each turmeric and rosewood
  • 6 drops neroli
  • 8 drops each ginger and peppermint
  • 5 drops black pepper

Method

Mix the oils in a glass bowl and keep the blend into a dark colored glass bottle. Store it away from heat and direct sunlight. Apply as you would any oil/lotion on cellulite prone areas. This oil can be used as both prevention and treatment.

Give the lipids about 30 minutes on your skin before heading into the shower and giving those cottage cheese patches the hot and cold treatment. Start with the hot shower, cranking up the dial to the hottest setting that you can tolerate and endure the heat for 2-3 minutes.

When you get the familiar uncomfortable warm feeling that is associated with a sauna or a hot tub, plough through it for another 20-30 seconds and then go all the way to the other side with the dial at the coldest setting.

The cold shower should be shorter at 30-60 seconds and just when you can’t stand the chill anymore, endure for another 10-15 seconds and turn the dial back to hot. You will need 3-4 rounds of this, which works out to about 10-15 minutes of shower time. You can end with a warm or comfortably hot shower. Pat dry your skin with a soft towel and moisturize.

5. The anti-cellulite scrub

What Are The Best Essential Oils That Treat, Reduce And Remove Cellulite Essential Oil Benefits

  • 2 tsp coffee grounds (you will need the grounds to be “instant-coffee” fine), so use your coffee mill at the smallest particle size setting.
  • 2 tbsp sea salt or Himalayan pink salt
  • 2 tbsp gotu kola powder
  • 20 ml mustard seed oil
  • 15 ml neem seed oil
  • 15 ml evening primrose oil
  • 7 drops each of calamus and sweet flag essential oils (these are rare but can be found online)
  • 10 drops grapefruit
  • 8 drops each of patchouli and cypress
  • 5 drops clove and cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp raw honey and yoghurt/ buttermilk as required for each batch

Method

Mix the oils and store in an amber glass bottle but put together the dry ingredients only when you intend to make and use the scrub. In a medium sized bowl, remove the required quantity of coffee, salt and gotu kola powder. Add a tablespoon of honey to this mix and enough yoghurt/buttermilk to form a toothpaste-like mixture. To this add 1 tsp of the oil blend and whisk well.

Apply on the affected areas, using upward and circular strokes. Do not apply too much downward pressure; you don’t want to scrub your skin raw. Each affected area should get at least 2-3 minutes of massage time. Apply the remaining scrub as you would a mask and cover the treated area with plastic wrap. Let the ingredients work on your skin for 30 minutes then wash off with warm water. Pat dry your skin and moisturize.

Coconut Oil For Cellulite

What Are The Best Essential Oils That Treat, Reduce And Remove Cellulite Essential Oil Benefits

A lot of people argue that coconut oil may not be the best bet for cellulite problems because 90% of it is saturated fatty acids or what we know as bad cholesterol. But the problem with this argument is that cellulite is not an obesity related problem and even if the extra pounds that you pack around the midriff are making those bumps appear more prominent, coconut oil, used topically, is hardly going to contribute to the inches on your thighs and buttocks.

With that out of the way, let me tell you why and how coconut oil can actually help in your fight against cellulite. Lauric acid, which is a major constituent of coconut oil and a saturated fatty acid, displays fantastic abilities to penetrate through the dermal layers.

It is also a potent anti-inflammatory agent and a power moisturizer that has the ability to improve the health and strength of the collagen strands. Put these properties together and you get an ingredient that gets deep into the skin and makes an impact where it is needed. Lauric acid also happens to be one of the most effective transport mediums for natural caffeine.

Apart from this medium chain triglyceride, coconut oil also contains vitamins A, E and D, all of which are not just fantastic for your skin but also for the connective tissue. The best part is that beneficial effects of coconut oil can be magnified by a few simple additions. You will need:

  • 1 cup coconut oil (melted)
  • 15 drops sweet orange essential oil
  • 1 tsp coffee essential oil (Coffee arabica)
  • ½ tsp cinnamon powder
  • 2 pinches nutmeg powder

Method

Mix the oils and the spice powders and store the blend in a dark glass bottle. Roll the bottle in between your palms each time before use. Apply liberally on the affected parts and then cover with plastic wrap.

If you are dealing with cellulite on the buttocks, you will have to use the plastic wrap all around your hips. The next step is to give the blend some time to work; about 45 minutes to one hour is what you need. You will feel the sensation of heat in the treated area but as long as it isn’t a serious sting, you have nothing to worry about. If you have particularly sensitive skin, remove nutmeg from the recipe.

After the treatment, wash the area with warm water and apply your favorite moisturizer or simply dab on some more coconut oil or kokum butter. Try this treatment every alternate day for 2 weeks and then take a break of one week.

Castor Oil For Cellulite

What Are The Best Essential Oils That Treat, Reduce And Remove Cellulite Essential Oil Benefits

Perhaps the most popular treatment for cellulite through the ages, castor oil remains a favorite to this day for dealing with orange peel skin thanks to its property of regulating the workings of both the circulatory and the lymphatic system.

Although toxins are not entirely to be blamed for cellulite, they do play an indirect role by adding to the oxidative stress suffered by the connective tissue and the dermal cells. Castor oil helps to strengthen the connective tissue by offering lubrication and protection from free radicals.

The viscous carrier oil not only prevents the loss of moisture from the dermal layers but also enhances the synthesis of both collagen and elastin. So, the health benefits of this oil are indeed more than just skin deep. Even on its own, castor oil is an effective treatment for cellulite. But when you blend it with other natural ingredients, the results are nothing short of stupefying. Here is what you will need:

  • 1 cup castor oil
  • ½ cup camellia sinensis seed oil (tea seed oil not tea tree oil)
  • 4 gel caps of vitamin E
  • ½ tsp sweet fennel essential oil
  • ½ tsp carrot seed essential oil
  • 10 drops coriander/parsley essential oil

Mix the oils together in a bowl. Add the contents of the vitamin E gel caps to this blend by cutting open the capsules. Whisk and pour the blend into a dark colored glass bottle. To use, remove about 2-3 tbsp of the blend into a small bowl and microwave for 10-15 seconds. You want the oil to be warm not hot. Massage the oil on areas that have the infamous orange peel skin.

Simply rubbing the oil in won’t help. Because you want the impact of your massage to go well beyond the skin, you will need to use palpating massage. This involves pinching the affected area in between your thumb and fingers and then rolling the pinched flesh with your fingers using circular strokes.

The idea is to get to the connective tissue as well as the adipose (fat) tissue that sits underneath it. Unfortunately, some areas that have cellulite can be hard to reach or at least very tiring to massage. Personally, after a few minutes I find the exercise tiring. So, if you can get somebody else to indulge you with a massage, all the better. If not, I prefer to use a vibrating, hand held, deep tissue massager.

These contraptions are both affordable and effective, but remember to not buy the battery operated versions because they simply don’t pack in the punch needed to deal with cellulite. Another option is to use an EMS or electrical muscle stimulation device.

These are not expensive, but if you suffer from any chronic or acute health concerns, I would highly recommend that you get the go ahead from your doctor before using one of these devices.  For best results, treat yourself to this anti-cellulite massage oil blend and massage every alternate day for a period of no less than 6- 8 weeks.

7 Ways To Get Rid Of Cellulite Naturally

What Are The Best Essential Oils That Treat, Reduce And Remove Cellulite Essential Oil Benefits

1. Eat your way to cellulite free living

You already know about the havoc that fast foods, refined carbs, sugar and sodas wreak on all parts of your body. So, is there any reason to assume that those collagen fibers won’t fall prey to your excesses? These foods not only cause weight gain but also lead to widespread inflammation in the body, which literally eats away at the connective tissue.

Opt for healthy dietary choices, and you will see that all those vitamins and minerals from the colorful fruits and veggies will literally turn back time for your body, including that dimpled backside.

2. Work out the bumps and dents

Being in good shape is no guarantee that you will never suffer from cellulite. However, strength training and even yoga can go a long way in improving the strength and integrity of the connective fibers. I am particularly partial to sun salutations, which are a great way to warm up before a rigorous strength training session; plus they do really stretch and tone those collagen fibers.

3. Drink to cellulite free skin

Do not underestimate the power of H2O when it comes to keeping the skin and its supporting structures in the pink of health. In fact, nothing flushes out the toxins and boosts circulation and metabolism like water on the rocks. But, if you want to get more from the liquids you put in your body, you can get the best of what Mother Nature has to offer with these infusions:

a) Soak 1 tsp fenugreek seeds in a cup of water overnight. In the morning, the seeds will have settled to the bottom of the cup, pour the water into another cup and set the seeds aside in a bowl (powder in the food processor/spice mill and mix with yoghurt and honey to get a natural and extremely potent antioxidant body scrub).

To the fenugreek infused water, add the juice of ½ lemon, 1 tsp manuka honey (raw) and a pinch of black pepper powder. Drink up this nature-power packed infusion half an hour before you give in to the call of caffeine or hunger.

b) Mix 3 tbsp of sweet fennel seeds and 1 tsp cumin seeds with 5 tbsp of rooibos tea (red tea). Enjoy 2-3 cups of infusion tea made from this blend through the day.

4. The anti-cellulite mask

Mud masks have long been used in high street salons to deal with cellulite because they help to improve circulation and tighten the skin. But if you are not keen on spending a few hundred bucks every other week on such treatments here is an “at-home” version that offers the same results at a fraction of the cost. You will need:

  • 1 cup Bentonite/green clay
  • 2 heaped tablespoon licorice root powder
  • 2 tsp manjishta (Indian madder) powder (this ingredient can be found online)
  • 2 tsp burdock root powder
  • 2 heaped tablespoon matcha
  • Water/soy milk/rose hydrosol as required

Mix the clay and the herbal powders and store them in a steel or glass container in a cool and dry place. Depending on the area you need to cover, you may need 2-3 tbsp of this mix each time. Simply remove the required amount of the dry mix into a bowl and add the liquid of your choice to make a smooth and thick paste. You are going for the consistency of cake batter.

Spread all over the affected area and cover with plastic wrap and let the mask work its magic for an hour.  If you can spend about 20 minutes on your feet or lying on your tummy, without moving around, simply spread the mask on the affected part and leave it be till it dries.

Personally, I prefer the second approach because as the mask dries, you feel the gentle and natural tug that helps to draw out the toxins, tightens the skin and above all pulls blood towards the surface of the skin, which means that the connective tissue gets its fill of nutrients and oxygen. Wash the mask off with warm water and moisturize the treated parts. Weekly use of this mask offers conspicuous results within 3-4 months.

5. Supplements can help too

A high quality multivitamin and an extra helping of vitamin C will definitely lend a helping hand in your fight against cellulite. Moreover, herbs like gotu kola, guggul, dandelion extract and horse chestnut extract offer promising results against cellulite. And while you are using those, don’t forget to get your daily dose of antioxidant Omega 3s with a high-quality fish oil supplement and a generous sprinkling of flaxseed on your oats or cereals.

6. Apple Cider Vinegar

This power ingredient consistently shows up on the list of popular household remedies for an extensive range of applications, one of which is its ability to flush out the toxins that can get trapped in the skin.

This is due to the fact that apple cider vinegar is rich in minerals such as potassium, calcium and magnesium, and it also contains alpha hydroxy acids, all of which play a role in maintaining the health and elasticity of your skin.

Create a solution made of two parts water and one part apple cider vinegar, and rub this mixture on the affected area. Leave it on the skin for about 30 minutes, and then rinse it off with warm water. You might have to rinse more than once to get rid of the strong smell of the apple cider vinegar. This homemade concoction will help improve your skin’s firmness and appearance.

7. Tomatoes

Not only do tomatoes taste great on a burger, but they are highly useful for a number of household remedies as well. Tomatoes are an abundant source of lycopene, which is an organic compound that contributes to the prevention of collagen breakdown.

Crush two or three whole tomatoes into a paste, and then mix in one to two teaspoons of fresh lemon juice. Spread this paste onto your problem area and let it sit for about 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse off with lukewarm water. Repeat this routine daily until you begin to see an improvement in your skin.

The Bottom Line

It is necessary to save yourself from the various rip-off’s prowling in the marketplace such as cellulite creams, vibration and laser treatments, cellulite removal drugs, and anti-cellulite clothes that can only confuse you more.

Whether you call it “cottage cheese”, “hail damage” or “the mattress effect”, cellulite is no fun to deal with and can be tough to get rid of with using essential oils only. However when incorporated with an exercise routine and a healthy high fiber and low fat diet that also includes lots of fluid intake, cellulite has no chance! Be patient, regular and careful, and in a month, you will start to see results.

The essential oil and lifestyle changes / home remedies discussed in this article are something I have either tried myself or been recommended by trusted sources of mine. They should all help you regulate the fat in your body and address many possible causes of cellulite – they are worth giving a try!
