Essential Oils To Wake You Up In the Morning

Essential Oils To Wake You Up In the Morning Essential Oil Benefits

Need an extra boost in the morning to get you going? You’re in for a treat as I reveal the best essential oils to energize you, along with ways to use and blend them to help you make the most of the day!

When I first mentioned to friends that I was writing a post on essential oils to wake up in the morning, I experienced a whole spectrum of reactions. Some were instantly excited, offering me suggestions based on their own experiences; some laughed at my ‘hippiness’, and some straight-up laughed at the notion that essential oils can actually wake you up.

Wherever you are on that spectrum now (and I wouldn’t mind betting you’re pretty excited about essential oils in general, seeing you’re on my blog) I hope that you’ll be inspired to experiment with using essential oils to get you out of bed in the morning with a spring in your step.

Brief Introduction About Essential Oils

Essential oils are nature’s purest oils that have been extracted from the bark, flowers, roots, seeds, stems, and other parts of plants, and have amazing abilities to improve our physical and mental wellbeing. These oils can be applied to skin, inhaled and diffused, or taken orally (always consult your doctor before doing so), depending on what they are and what you’ll be using them for.

It’s important to use essential oils properly in order to fully benefit from these powerful substances, so if you’re not sure what you’re doing, please ask a qualified aromatherapist for guidance, browse this site or send me an email for further advice.

As with most alternatives to contemporary medicines, there will always be people who will make fun of you for using nature to improve your health and wellbeing. Essential oils have been used for centuries and genuinely do make a difference to many aspects of your life.

Whilst many medicinal drugs have similar properties, I prefer harnessing the power of nature to help treat any ailments I have (I’m sure you’d know that by now). I love using natural methods for everything – from sleep troubles to anxiety to relieving aches and pains. If you’re open to trying new things, essential oils are definitely worth giving a go.

There’s a huge range of essential oils out there, but I’d suggest looking out for organic ones to make sure you’re really helping your body as much as possible. Some are ones that you would have heard of already, even if you’re new to the game, such as using lavender to help you sleep. Others, like cinnamon, can be used while cleaning the home as they have natural abilities to kill germs and dispel bad odors. Whatever you’re looking for from essential oils, you’ll be able to find it.

Experiment with Essential Oils

Recently, I’ve been looking into and experimenting with using essential oils to help wake me up in the morning and wanted to share information about the best ones, how to blend them and how best to incorporate them into your life.

Swap Your Latte: I’m renowned for being very dependent on caffeine to get me up and behaving like a (semi-) functioning human being. I once worked out how much caffeine I was putting into my body each day and was horrified. Partially at how much money I must have spent on all of my almond-milk-triple-shots but also at the side effects my poor body must be suffering from that I’d just brushed aside as ‘normal’ because I’d had them for so long. Thankfully, there are so many, healthier alternatives out there…

Each essential oil has its own property, scent and general feel, if that makes sense. I love going into whole-food and health stores  and smelling endless little brown glass bottles to see which one ‘feels’ right to me. Once you’ve decided on an oil, it’s easy to find it online if you prefer shopping that way, and you can have so much fun mixing your own blends.

I like a whole range of scents depending on the time of year and my general mood. Some days, I love fresh, citrusy notes; other days I opt for something woody and spicy. My shower floor is covered in a whole heap of organic gels, soaps and scrubs for all of these moods, and my perfumes range from lily to amber scents.

Go with what feels right for you and you’ll feel a whole lot more comfortable experimenting with essential oils than if you force yourself to use something that just doesn’t feel right.

Morning Energy Boost

To hit that citrusy note I crave some mornings, lemon oil can be super refreshing and can sharpen the senses to get you awake and ready for the day. Happily, peppery scents can be really invigorating and help get you out of bed – I like these flavor-notes for fall and winter days when I’m really struggling to stumble around in the pitch-black mornings!

Rosemary, for me, is a great blend of fresh and woody, so it suits my skin all year round. I like to wear some essential oils on my skin, such as this one, as it’s non-harmful and I love the smell of it so much.

You might find an oil that takes you back to a particular place or memory, which can be so lovely if you choose to use essential oils for help with anxiety or stress. You can also inhale or diffuse essential oils in the morning or throughout the day if you find it easier. I’ll run through a brief guide to using different essential oils to give you a boost of energy!

My favorite 7 Wake Up And Go Essential Oils

Essential Oils To Wake You Up In the Morning Essential Oil Benefits

1. Lemon

Citrusy scents actively increase the production of the ‘happy chemical’ serotonin in your body, which acts a huge mood booster and makes waking up much easier.

I’d suggest inhaling it when you wake up and keeping it handy in case you need a lift throughout the day. You can also use it in a diffuser in your bedroom once you’re awake to help improve your mood while you’re getting ready. After your shower, apply a couple of drops to your hands and inhale – having warm skin will help the scent sink in and you’ll get a lovely, zesty boost!

You can mix lemon with tea tree oil for a super fresh scent, or with grapefruit to maintain that citrusy goodness. It also works really well with basil for a herby injection of energy. Lemon and orange essential oils can be used as a mood-improver any time of day!

2. Rosemary

Rosemary essential oil is so good for you that its worth using all the time! Once diluted in a carrier oil, it can be applied to the skin (do a skin test first if you have sensitive skin!), can be inhaled/ diffused and can also be incorporated into meals and drinks. Make sure you follow the information on the label to ensure you’re staying safe! If in doubt, please consult your health practitioner.

This oil helps wake me up and also helps with any problems of fatigue – so it’s worth keeping on you all day if you suffer from energy slumps. This is one of my favorite scents, so I’m lucky that it also has so many great health benefits.

If you’re looking to blend this with other oils, it pairs really nicely with lavender and basil – both have sweet, herbaceous and slightly camphorus scents. If you want something with more of a kick, mix it with eucalyptus.

3. Peppermint

Not just for toothpaste, peppermint can be such a lovely essential oil to use in the mornings. It’s also excellent for your digestive system so make sure to keep it on you throughout the day.

If you suffer from nausea in the morning (I used to get it from work-related stress all the time!), peppermint is really good at soothing the stomach. I also get achy hips a lot (good old genetics), and rubbing peppermint oil onto joints can make such a massive difference.

The minty aroma is great for inhaling or diffusing and will really help keep you focused and improve your ability to concentrate  throughout the day. We’ve all seen gum adverts that advertize the power behind a good old whiff of minty freshness, so imagine that boost at any time of day!

Peppermint can be blended with other oils, including lavender and rosemary for a herby scent, or with oils like sweet orange for a zesty one.

4. Basil

Unsurprisingly, given that I’ve already suggested it as an accompaniment to other oils to get you out of bed, basil is a beautiful essential oil for mornings!

This essential oil actively stimulates certain chemical reactions in your brain and body, which means you can focus and concentrate more. If you often wake up feeling groggy, you can rub a few drops onto your temples to relieve tension headaches.

Also, although the complete opposite of this article’s aim, try using lavender oil in the evenings to help you sleep better, and for longer!

Basil mixes nicely with lime and lemon oils – think ‘basil mojito on the beach’. Inhaling basil can really open your mind and ease aches and tension, as well as relieving fatigue.

5. Ginger

Ginger is one of my favorite foods in the world, in any form. I carry raw ginger root around with me to relieve any nausea, as well as improve my mood in general. Ginger essential oil is great for circulation, which in turn helps you to perk up and stay more alert, so it’s perfect for mornings.

You can eat in its natural form (it doesn’t necessarily have to be raw if you don’t like it that way), and it works wonderfully in teas or aromatic meals like stir-fries. You can also inhale the oil in the mornings to get you going, and carry it with you during the day in case you need an energy lift.

If you want to get fancy and mix things up, add this to cinnamon or sandalwood for a lovely, warm scent and feel. If you’re after a more potent, energetic blend, mix it with orange, ylang ylang or lime.

6. Juniper

Juniper essential oil is known as a ‘cleanser’ – effectively cleaning the body of negative energy and fatigue. It has a lovely sweet smell to it, and works to wake you up gently.

This can be inhaled in the morning or diffused into your room once you’ve woken up. If you choose to apply to your skin, mix it with equal amounts of a carrier oil (a base oil with no major beneficial properties other than to dilute other oils when applying them to the skin), such as argan oil for a really lovely feel and scent.

Want to experiment? Add a few drops of sage to the juniper oil and prepare for a full-body wake up and cleanse. You’ll end up feeling fully recharged with full of great, positive energy. Worth giving a go, surely?

7. Cinnamon

If you’ve ever tasted cinnamon or burnt scented candles, you’ll know what a delicious, warm scent it offers. It always reminds me of Christmas, and instantly makes me feel cozy and safe. It’s also a great oil to help boost your energy as it improves your circulation thanks to its natural spiciness/heat.

Don’t worry, despite being ‘warm’ rather than ‘zesty’, inhaling cinnamon oil won’t make you sleepy! It stimulates better circulation and encourages more blood flow to the brain which helps you wake up and stay focused. Whilst you can apply it to your skin, I’d opt for inhaling or diffusing it in order to really appreciate all it has to offer, health-wise and as a general scent to have around the home.

If you want to mix it with something, try it with black pepper or cloves to enhance its warmth. As you might be able to guess, these kind of combinations are among my favorites for fall and winter. It also works surprisingly well with grapefruit if you prefer citrusy, fresh scents.

Find Your Own Essentials

So there we go – some great, caffeine-free alternatives to get you up and energized in the morning! Hopefully, you’ll feel inspired to give some of these essential oils a go, or start blending and diffusing them yourself to find a combination that works best for you. If you’re pregnant or have any existing medical condition, please consult your doctor before trying any essential oils, just to be on the safe side.

These oils can be such a wonderful way to improve your daily wellbeing – not just as a means for waking up, but to help with anxiety and stress, to improve creativity and, of course, to help you wind down and sleep. Now, go and have fun being a morning person – you’ll be amazed at how much more of the day there is to enjoy!

I lather up my black pepper shower gel and add two drops of peppermint when in the shower in the morning which works a treat. If I am feeling super tired, I add it to my conditioner (again only 2 drops). I've also made a lemon, basil and peppermint soap :) Thanks for the great advice.

I used lavender and peppermint essential oils to inhale and or to rub into my skin. I really like it, i had some skin issues before, and these oils heal it. But we all have different skin types though, so as Olivia mention here its better to ask some guidance first :)
