Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin)

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

You will find five treatment routines in this section, each involving the use of four masks and catering to different skin types and conditions.

Now, before we go any further, let me clarify one very important thing – using multiple masks does not mean layering them on top of each other.

In fact, you will wash your face clean after each mask and then proceed to apply the next mixture. The idea is to prep your skin for the treatment that follows. This way, you end up with a range of benefits and get more from the ingredients used in each mask.

So, here are a few multi-mask routines that can be used once or twice a month.

A. Face Mask For Very Dry and Cracking / Flaking SkinBest DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

Recipe 1

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp apricot kernel oil
  • 1 tbsp pumpkin seed oil
  • 1 tsp gotukola powder
  • 1 tsp spirulina powder
  • 1 tbsp honey

Method:

Mix the powders together in a glass bowl and add honey to the dry ingredients. If the paste seems like dough or is too thick, add a few drops of your favorite hydrosol to it. Remember, just a few drops as you want this mixture to have a consistency of toothpaste. Then, add the oils to this paste and whisk the ingredients for 2-3 minutes.

Although the powders play the role of a binding medium, it can be hard to mix lipids with honey. So, get ready to whisk with all the muscle strength you can muster. This is going to take about 3-4 minutes of whisking at the least.

Alternatively, pour the mixture into your food processor and run the machine on its highest setting for a good 2 minutes or use a hand-held blender and you will end up with a smooth and homogenous emulsion.

To apply this mask, first cleanse, exfoliate and steam your skin. While your face is still damp, apply this mask like you would a lotion and massage for a good 10-15 minutes.

This mask can be used around the eyes as well but stay far away from the lashes. Since it contains honey, it will sting badly if it gets into your eyes.

Smooth over the remaining mask in a thin layer over your face; sit back and relax, allowing the lipids and herbs to work on your skin for a good 30 minutes, making a total of 45 minutes of application time.

After half an hour, wash your face with warm water or the steam water used earlier, cool it down to tepid and then wash your face without using a cleanser. Pat your skin dry and that is it. You don’t have to use a moisturizer after this treatment.

Recipe 2

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp mustard oil
  • 1 tsp flaxseed oil
  • 1 tsp silk protein
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • 4 drops jasmine essential oil
  • 4 drops grapefruit essential oil

Method:

Mix the mustard and the flaxseed oil together in a glass bowl. To this mixture of lipids, add the essential oils of jasmine and grapefruit.

Next, mix in the silk protein and the cinnamon powder. Give the mixture a good whisk till the powders and the lipids come together to form a smooth lotion, without any lumps. Owing to the use of silk protein, this mask will have an exceptionally silky and smooth texture.

To apply, begin by cleansing your face, follow with exfoliation and steaming. You can use the fruity steam mix with this recipe.

Like with the other recipes in this series, application of the mask should start with a good 15 minutes of massage. Divide it into two segments of 7-8 minutes of hand massage, moving your fingers and the palms of your hands in upwards and side way strokes on your skin.

Continue the massage with a mechanical device such as an ultra sound or vibrating massager. You will have quite a bit of the mask left over even after liberally applying it for the massage. Smooth this on your skin and leave it on for about half an hour.

Although you can apply this mask on the skin around your eyes, you will need to be exceptionally careful because both cinnamon and mustard oil will not just sting like crazy if they get into your eyes but may even cause serious damage.

So, it is best to stay away from the upper eyelid and the lower lash line. After 30 minutes, wash your face with warm water or wipe it off with cotton wool soaked in warm tea. You don’t need to moisturize after this treatment.

Recipe 3

Ingredients:

  • 10-15 whole almonds
  • 2 tsp sweet almond oil
  • 7-8 black raisins / 15-20 Zante currants
  • 1 tbsp sesame or pumpkin seeds
  • Lemon hydrosol/orange juice (optional and as required)

Method:

Soak the sesame/pumpkin seeds along with the raisins/currants in warm almond milk or water. The almonds will also have to be soaked but these are best treated separately as you will need to soak them overnight to get rid of the outer brown skin. Grind the seeds and the raisins together to get a smooth paste.

To this mixture add the sweet almond oil and give the mask a good whisk, preferably using your hand-held blender. If the mask is too thick use some orange juice/lemon hydrosol, whatever you have handy, to adjust the consistency. Like other oil masks in this series, the aim is to prepare a mixture that feels like a store-bought lotion and has the same consistency.

To apply, cleanse your skin first and exfoliate gently or exfoliate the night before. If orange juice is used in the recipe and you scrub your skin too hard when exfoliating, the ascorbic acid in the juice will make your skin sting and cause redness. Steaming will help but only do so if you don’t have sensitive skin.

Massage the mask on your face for about 15 minutes and then smooth over the remaining mixture in a thin layer, which should be kept on for 30 minutes.

Go ahead and use the mask on the skin around your eyes as well, but make sure you catch any wayward drops that threaten to run into your eyes.

Wash with warm water or wipe with warm tea. Moisturize lightly after this treatment. If you have used orange juice in the recipe no need to tone your skin after the treatment.

Recipe 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp walnut oil
  • 1 tsp sweet almond oil
  • 1 tsp ashwagandha
  • ½ tsp honey (optional)
  • 3 drops lemongrass essential oil
  • 3 drops myrrh essential oil

Method:

Mix the walnut and the sweet almond oils together in a glass bowl and add the essential oils to this mixture. Whisk well to ensure that the essential oils are mixed thoroughly.

Set this oil mixture aside and in another small bowl, take the required amount of honey and add the ashwagandha (Indian Ginseng) powder to it. Mix well and then add the oil mixture to this.

Whisk vigorously to ensure that the honey and the lipids form one smooth blend. As for the other masks, you can always use a hand-held blender for the task.

Another way to prepare this oil mask is to use ashwagandha infused oil in the recipe instead of the powder. If you are using ashwagandha macerated oil, leave out the honey since it is only used as a binding agent in this recipe.

In case of the infused oil, simply whisk together all the carrier and infused oils and then add in the essential oils to prepare your lipids blend.

Instructions for application are the same as above. In a nutshell, massage your skin with the blend for 15 minutes, then apply the remaining mixture as you would any mask and keep it on for no less than half an hour.

Wash with warm water or wipe using cotton wool or a face cloth soaked in warm tea. Pat your skin dry and tone and lightly moisturize. Hold off the moisturization for a few hours if you don’t have very dry skin.

Once again, this lipid based, non-drying mask can definitely be used on the skin around your eyes but both honey and ashwagandha will sting if you get the mask in your eyes. So, be careful!

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

As for all other face mask recipes that follow below, there is no need to cleanse or exfoliate beforehand.

B. For dry skin

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

Step 1: For cleansing and exfoliation

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp raw honey
  • 2 tsp flaxseed meal (heaped)

Mix the olive oil with the flaxseed meal and add honey to this paste. Blend the ingredients using a fork till you get a smooth and thick paste.

Apply on your skin as you would any exfoliating face wash, massaging your face and neck in upward strokes. Use gentle pressure to slough off the dead cells and cellular debris.

Keep the cleansing mask on your skin for 7-10 minutes, massaging areas of the face that are prone to blackheads, hyper-pigmentation and wrinkles.

After 7 minutes, wash your face with warm water or wipe it off using cotton wool soaked in warm green tea. If you have used green tea, apply the next mask while your skin is still damp.

Step 2: Antioxidant protection, nourishing, anti-hyper pigmentation

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

  • 2-4 tbsp coconut cream
  • ½ tsp mustard seed paste
  • 1 tsp matcha
  • 1 tsp plantain powder
  • ½ tsp olive leaf extract
  • ½ tsp licorice root extract

For this recipe, you will need to start with milled mustard seeds (just the soft yellow part on the inside with the black seed coat removed) also known as mustard flour. You will find this in most specialty food stores or you can order it online.

Take about 2-5 heaped tablespoons of this and grind to a smooth paste using the blender/ food processor and some water.

You will only need about ½ tsp of this paste in the recipe. The rest can be frozen in an airtight container. If it has been made beforehand and frozen, thaw the mustard paste and take the required amount into a glass bowl.

Add matcha, plantain leaf powder, olive leaf extract and licorice root extract to it. Pour in about 2 tablespoons of coconut cream into the bowl and mix till you get a thick but homogenous paste. Adjust the quantity of coconut milk as required.

Apply this mask in a thick coat all over your face and neck except the skin around the eyes. Keep it on for 20 minutes and wash it off with cold water. Pat your skin dry and go for the next mask.

Step 3: Hydrating, moisturizing, healing and anti-oxidant

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

  • 10-15 rose petals or 1 tsp rose petal powder
  • 1 tsp rosehip powder
  • ½ tsp algae extract or 1 tsp spirulina
  • 2 tbsp Greek yoghurt
  • ½ avocado (small)

Mash the green flesh of ½ an avocado to a smooth puree and add yoghurt to it. Blend using a fork till you get a creamy mixture with no chunky avocado bits in it.

Next, reach for the rose petals. Remember these have to be used immediately once crushed, but you do have the option of using rose petal powder if you can’t get your hands on fresh blooms.

If using rose petals, wash these under running cold water and grind to a paste using a mortar and pestle.

Mix the petal paste with the yoghurt-avocado mixture. Add rosehip powder and algae extract/ spirulina to this mixture and blend till you get a smooth, creamy paste. You may have to add some whey or buttermilk to get the consistency right (should be like cake batter).

Massage your face and neck for a good 10 minutes with this creamy formulation, using upward strokes and gentle pressure.

Then, apply the remaining mixture in a thick coat all over your skin, including the area under your peepers. Keep the mask on for 15-20 minutes and wash it off with warm water. Don’t forget the final splashing of cold water.

Step 4: Long lasting protection and moisturizing

  • 1 tbsp hempseed oil
  • 1 tbsp argan oil
  • 1 tbsp evening primrose oil
  • 4 drops each of lavender, geranium and rose/palma rosa essential oils

Blend these oils in advance and store in a dark glass bottle. Apply 3-4 drops all over your face and neck after the last mask treatment.

C. For aging skin

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

Step 1: Cleansing and exfoliation

  • 1 tbsp raw honey
  • 1 tsp coconut oil (virgin) or sesame seed oil
  • ½ tsp rose petal powder
  • ½ tsp lavender powder

Mix the floral powders with honey and once you have a lump-free paste, add coconut oil to it. Whisk the ingredients till you get a homogenous mixture.

Apply all over your face and neck, using circular movement to massage your skin with this formulation. Use gentle but firm pressure, concentrating on problematic areas that have open pores, hyper-pigmentation and fine lines.

The massage and the mask are meant to remove cellular debris and dirt from the surface of the skin as well as the grime trapped inside the pores. But don’t use excess pressure or you will end up causing micro tears and inflammation.

After 5 minutes of massage, keep this mask on your skin for another 5 minutes. To wash, use tepid water or wipe your face off using cotton wool soaked in rosehip tea.

Step 2: Hydration, nourishment and protection

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

  • 1 slice papaya (peeled)
  • 1 tsp chlorella
  • ½ tsp vitamin C
  • 1 tsp plantain leaf powder
  • 1 tsp alfalfa powder
  • ½ tsp grapefruit seed extract
  • 1 tsp paste of cooked peas
  • Butter milk as required

Cook the peas and peel a slice of ripe papaya. Mash these together to form a smooth paste. You can use a fork or a hand-held blender to puree the vegetable and fruit.

To the paste, add chlorella, plantain leaf powder, alfalfa powder and grapefruit seed extract. Pour in some butter milk, about 2 teaspoons at first, and mix till you get a homogenous paste. Add more buttermilk if required.

Once the mixture has the consistency of cake batter in terms of both thickness and smoothness, add vitamin C to it. Whisk till all the vitamin C crystals are dissolved.

Although you can prepare this mask in advance, vitamin C should be added right before application because the nutrient degrades rapidly when exposed to air and moisture.

Apply the mask in a thick layer using your fingers. Cover all parts of your face and neck. This formulation can also be used on the under-eye skin. Keep the mask on for 20 minutes and wash it off with warm water. Go for a final splash of cold water before patting your skin dry.

Step 3: Heal, regenerate and moisturize

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

  • Ghee (clarified butter) as required
  • ¼ tsp black pepper powder (fine ground)
  • 1 tsp black lentil powder
  • 1 tsp flaxseed meal
  • 1 tsp mung bean flour

The most important and only requirement for this recipe is that all the dry ingredients have to be ground to the finest particle size. Once you accomplish this, simply mix all the dry ingredients with the clarified butter to form a muddy paste, with the consistency of skin lotion.

Apply on your face like you would any skin cream, massaging the formulation into your skin and allowing the dermal layers to soak up all the healing goodness of the ingredients.

Use upward strokes to massage your neck and your face but use a gentle hand or some of the ingredients might prove to be a bit abrasive.

You can also use a hand-held face massager. After about 10 minutes of massage, slather some more of the buttery mask on your skin in a very thin layer.

The clarified butter will melt as the heat of your body acts on it and it will start to drip, so it is best to not use a thick layer.

Keep the mask on for 15 minutes after the massage and wash it off with warm water infused with green tea.

This is a nondrying mask, so you can use it on the skin around your eyes, but limits its use to just the under-eye area. If used on the upper lids, it will seep into your peepers.

Massage your face gently as you wash the mixture off. As usual, splash some cold water on your skin once you are done taking the mask off and pat your face dry.

Step 4: Long lasting glow and protection

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

  • 1 tbsp carrot seed carrier oil
  • ½ tbsp argan oil
  • 1 tbsp grapeseed oil
  • 2 drops ylang ylang essential oil
  • 4 drops frankincense essential oil
  • 4 drops geranium essential oil
  • 2 drops turmeric essential oil

These oils can be blended well in advance and stored in a dark glass bottle. To use, take about 3-4 drops of the mixture in the palms of your hands, rub them together to warm the oil with your natural body heat and apply all over your face and neck.

Because you have already given your skin a pampering massage in the last step, you don’t have to repeat. Simply press the oils into your skin to get all day protection and nourishment from them.

D. For normal skin

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

Step 1: Cleansing and exfoliation

  • 1-2 tbsp raw honey
  • ½ tsp licorice root powder (not extract, unless it is in powder form)
  • ½ tsp orange rind powder

Mix the dry ingredients with honey to form a thick paste. Apply all over your face and neck except the skin around your eyes.

Massage your skin with the mask using circular and upward strokes for about 5 minutes. Then, apply a thin layer of the remaining mixture all over your skin and sit back and relax.

Because licorice root powder has been used in the recipe, you will experience a mild sensation of warmth/stinging. To wash this mask off, use water at room temperature and make sure that you get all the gooey mixture off your skin. Pat your face dry and go to the next step.

Step 2: Nourishing, hydrating, soothing and antioxidant

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

  • ½ banana
  • 5-7 leaves of spinach or kale
  • 7- 9 leaves of basil
  • 1 tsp alfalfa powder
  • 1 tsp chlorella
  • 1 tsp wheatgrass powder
  • Almond/sesame milk as required

Wash the kale and basil leaves and peel the banana, puree the leaves and the fruit in the blender and add the dry ingredients to the pulp. Pour in 2-4 tablespoons of almond/sesame milk and blend at high speed for about a minute and your mask will be ready for use.

If you don’t have almond or sesame milk on hand, soak 7-9 almonds overnight, peel them and use these in the recipe along with some green tea or rose hydrosol.

Alternatively, you can soak sesame seeds in some warm water for about 3-4 hours and use these in the recipe just as you would the almonds.

Just make sure that the consistency of the mask is like that of cake batter, regardless of whether you use nut milk or soaked seeds/nuts.

Coat your skin with a thick layer of the mask and keep it on for 20 minutes. Wash it off with regular water and pat your skin dry. Do not apply this mask on the skin around the eyes. Instead use banana peels (chilled) on your peepers while this mask works on your skin.

Step 3: Hydrating and moisturizing

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

  • 1 tsp moringa leaves powder
  • ½ cooked sweet potato
  • ½ tsp fennel seed powder
  • ½ tsp cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp rice starch
  • 2 tbsp coconut /milk cream

If possible, use coconut cream in this recipe over milk cream, you will get better results from coconut cream instead of the dairy product. This is an easy recipe once you cook the sweet potato and get the rice starch going. Steaming is the best way to cook the sweet potato.

For the rice starch, add a heaped tablespoon of rice flour to ¾ cup of water and bring it to a boil. Simmer till you get to half the original quantity of the mixture then strain and cool to room temperature.

This can also be done the night before and the starch can be stored in the refrigerator for a day, without worrying about it going bad.

Peel and mash the sweet potato to a smooth pulp and add the powders to this puree. Also, add 2 tablespoons of rice starch and 2 tablespoons of coconut cream to the puree and powders and whisk with a fork till you get a smooth and homogenous paste.

If needed, add some more coconut cream to get the right consistency. As with the other masks, you are going for the thickness of cake batter.

Apply this mixture in a thick layer all over the face and the neck, including the area under the eyes. Keep it on for 20 minutes and wash it off with regular water or green tea infused water at room temperature. Pat your skin dry.

Step 4: All day glow and protection

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

  • 1 tbsp sweet almond oil
  • 1 tbsp grapeseed oil
  • 1 tbsp rosehip seed oil
  • 3 drops neroli essential oil
  • 3 drops basil essential oil
  • 3 drops oregano essential oil
  • 3 drops lavender essential oil

Blend the oils and store in a dark glass bottle and after the last mask has been washed off your face, apply about 3-4 drops of this oil all over the neck and the face. Use upward strokes to massage the oil on your skin.

E. For oily and combination skin

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

Step 1: Cleansing and exfoliation

  • 1 tbsp honey
  • ½ tsp neem leaf powder
  • ½ tsp chickpea (garbanzo bean) flour
  • Lemon hydrosol as needed

Mix the honey with the flour and the neem leaf powder. You will get a very thick paste, so add about a teaspoon of lemon hydrosol to get a lotion-like consistency. If you don’t have lemon hydrosol, lemon tea or just green tea will also do.

To use, apply the mixture all over your face and neck and massage your skin with it using circular strokes.

Use the natural exfoliating nature of the flour and the botanical powder to your advantage by gently scrubbing your skin for a good 5-7 minutes with the mixture.

Apply the remaining mask on your face and neck in a medium thick layer and keep it on for about 10 minutes. Wash it off with plain water or green tea infused water at room temperature. Pat your skin dry and go to the next step.

Step 2: Antioxidant, nourishing and regenerative

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

  • ½ tomato
  • 7-8 leaves of spinach or kale
  • 6-7 mint leaves
  • 2 tsp pomegranate peel powder
  • 2 pinch cinnamon powder (don’t use if you have very sensitive skin or are allergic to cinnamon)
  • ½ tsp olive leaf extract
  • Aloe vera juice/gel as required

Wash the tomato and the leafy greens and puree them in the blender, without using water. Remove the vegetable puree into a bowl and add pomegranate peel powder, cinnamon powder and olive extract to it. Mix well and add aloe juice/gel as required to get the consistency of cake batter.

Apply this mixture on your face and neck with a face mask brush and keep it on for 15 minutes. Wash it off with tap water and pat your face dry.

This mask will undo oxidative damage and protect your skin from free radicals. Moreover, it will nourish the dermal cells and erase hyper-pigmentation.

Step 3: Hydration moisturization and protection

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

  • 1 tsp mung bean flour
  • 1 tsp spirulina
  • 1 heaped tsp sesame seed paste
  • ½ avocado
  • Buttermilk as required

Soak a tablespoon of sesame seeds in warm water for about an hour and grind to a paste using the blender. Mash the creamy, green flesh of ½ avocado using a spoon, ensuring that there are no chunky bits left behind. To the avocado pulp, add the sesame seed paste and mix well.

Next, spoon in the mung bean flour and the spirulina. Pour some butter milk into the bowl along with these dry ingredients. About 2 tablespoons should be enough. Whisk the mixture till you get a homogenous paste, which is as thick as cake batter.

Apply it all over your face and neck, including the under-eye skin. Keep it on for 20 minutes and then wash it off with warm water. Splash some cold water on your face in the end and then pat your skin dry.

Step 4: Glow and protection without oiliness

Best DIY Face Mask Recipes For All Skin Types (aging, dry, normal/sensitive, oily/combination, very dry skin) Essential Oil Benefits

  • 1 tbsp grape seed oil
  • 1 tbsp evening primrose oil
  • 1 tbsp rosehip seed oil
  • 4 drops carrot seed essential oil
  • 3 drops tea tree oil
  • 3 drops lemongrass/sweet orange essential oil
  • 3 drops palma rosa essential oil

Blend these oils and keep them in a dark colored glass bottle for future use. After the mask treatment, apply about 3-4 drops of the oil on your face and neck, working in upward strokes. Massage your face with the oil blend for about 5 minutes and enjoy the all-day glow that this regimen offers.

These mask recipes sound like they would be very effective, as well as delicious, but in order to make just one of them, I would need to spend a lot of money purchasing the ingredients. Do you have any recipes with more common ingredients?
